ASCYO Orchestra Audition Performance Requirements -  Strings and Piano -  2022-2023

WOODWIND, BRASS, AND PERCUSSION REQUIREMENTS ARE BELOW THE STRINGS.

All students will be assessed based on their performance of the following elements:
SCALES & ARPEGGIOS
Students should prepare all listed scales and the arpeggio for each scale.  Scales should be played with vibrato and with an emphasis on intonation.  Half note single bows are acceptable, however it is preferred to perform scales slurring two quarter notes per bow followed by the arpeggio in the same note pattern at the same tempo.    Three octave scales and arpeggios may be performed as triplets.  Suggested tempo for scales is q=60.

NOTE:  Adjudicators may ask students to play scales faster or slower.
ETUDE/EXCERPT
See listed excerpts and exercise for each ensemble for the instrument.

Excerpt / Etude is not required for the Prep Orchestra or for Piano auditions.
PREPARED SOLO
Solo Piece of a student's choice.  This should be an entire piece or a movement from a sonata, concerto or etude.  Solo must be prepared in FULL, however students may be asked to perform only a portion of the solo.  Prep orchestra students should choose a piece that they are comfortable performing.

Click here for a list of suggested solos for auditions.

PLEASE PROVIDE AN EXTRA COPY OF THE MUSIC FOR THE AUDITION JUDGE.

ASCYO Orchestra Audition Performance Requirements -  Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion  -  2022-2023

NO AUDITION REQUIRED FOR CONCERT BAND

All students will be assessed based on their performance of the following elements:
SCALES
Students should prepare all listed scales in one octave.  Flutes and Clarinets may be asked to play scales in 2 octaves for Youth Orchestra Auditions.  SCALES ARE LISTED IN THE TRANSPOSED KEY, NOT CONCERT KEY.  Scales can be played at any tempo of the player's choice.

NOTICE:  Adjudicators may ask students to play scales faster or slower.
PREPARED SOLO
Solo Piece of a student's choice.  This should be something the student worked on in the Spring of 2022 and that they feel represents their current ability.  Something from their band method book would be perfectly acceptable for Advanced or Symphonic Band Members.
